In the **European Union**, **Regulation (EU) No 540/2014** mandates the **Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS)**. Starting in July 2021, all new electric and hybrid cars must emit a sound when driving below 20 km/h or reversing.
In the **United States**, the **National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)** issued a similar rule under the **Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act**. Since 2020, electric vehicles must produce audible sounds below about 18.6 mph (30 km/h).
